If you're going to be in Madison for DCI, you definitely don't want to
miss the SCV Alumni corps' performance at finals. They go on just before
the show starts, at 5:54 PM. If you're not going to finals, go hear them
practice and sit close. Last night I heard them rehearse and it was
great, just like you'd want it to be. The lead sops were just screamin'.
The horn line will have about 100 people (I saw one girl!) and the best
guys are 35 to 40 years old. Geez. Ira, Mikey, you still got it?

The corps will be in town Thursday and Friday and are staying in the
dorms or at apartments near the stadium. That's all I know right now. The
show lasts something like 20 minutes and includes bits and pieces from
the 35 years of the Vanguard. Ends with the Bottle Dance, of course.

Enjoy the show.

Rob, I just sold Bill Snyder a guitar at my music store and I can get a
hold of him very easily. Let me know your email address and I will
forward to him. Bill was my snare instructor in A corps in '78. He has
not changed one bit! Any one else needing any musical esoteria please
feel free to email me and I will get you a price on any guitars, drum
stuff, and I've got alot of used horns as well....trumpets,bones,saxes
blah blah blah.........

Gary   03/Jun/2002:04:14:18
Just an FYI- if you go to the DCI website, they are now selling 1974-
1999 finals on DVD! $39.00 a piece is a little steep but at least they
are finally making these available.

to get it back. Thanks for the memory

Gene G.   07/Apr/2002:12:11:18
Hey Judy, I actually remember you, specifically for one thing: We were
on our way to a show and cruising down the highway. You were doing
something with your rifle, and it actually slipped or flew out of your
hands and right out the window as we were rolling along. Pretty funny,
and just the look on your face alone was pretty memorable...HA!

I marched in the Guardsmen from 1975-1978, I was also in the color
guard from 76-81. I am married to Jeff Mitchell who also marched in
both the cadets and the Guardsmen. We have been married for almost 15
years now. The last 10 years we have been living in Atlanta, Ga.
Recently we moved back to the Hoffman Estates area. We both have
wonderful memories of drum corps I feel bad for those who grew up
without the drum corps experience. Jeff and I still play the albums
from those years. I am trying to locate Cathy Jacob. Both she and her
brother Steve marched in the Guardsmen in the 1970's. If anyone knows
how to get a hold of either Cathy or Steve please E-mail me at
jeffandjudym@yahoo.com.
We would love to see everyone at a reunion.

Terri D., is this your doing?

Calling all Guardsmen! Hi this is Jeff Haynes from the UK who as
a "roadie" toured with the Guardsmen in 1980. I cant beleive that its
21 and a bit years since that summer! Anyway, I just found this site as
I head for a mid life crisis and wish to gather my past before I go
quite crazy!

If you recall we did the summer tour with you to Birmingham finals. We,
being the 2 Ians (Messrs Lyall and Newton), Ivan Balchin plus myself.
Having spent the first 10 days or so acclimatising to the US way
of life at the Hagopians in Itasca we journeyed south with the
Guardsmen talking in memorable er, sites as Cary ID, and Huntsville AL.
Big memory was the bus (which caught fire) replaced by a Church Bus -
Hence the tour theme "On a mission from God!"

However, the biggest memory is the great hospitality from all the
Guardsmen, the instructors and the support crew. Finally a big hello to
Kevin, Mitch and Tina Hagopian, Bob Callahan, Yvonne (mallets), Lester
Roberts (!!!),Jim Campbell plus many

Geno   18/Feb/2002:11:45:50
Hey Dick Severa...How ya doin'? That '79 drumline was full of some of
the most talented percussion people I had ever met, and yet as a
percussion section as a whole, we never fully clicked and really
played "clean." We certainly had power and a decent bunch of charts to
play. But of the three sections (Horns, Percussion and Guard) we had a
harder time keeping up with the scores of the other two. It was
certainly no small task, however, to keep up (scoring-wise) with what
was no doubt one of the finest hornlines drum corps has ever heard. I'm
not saying we held the corps back, because we were certainly
competitive. But I agree that, had we had one more year together as a
section, we would have been quite awesome.

Geno   18/Feb/2002:11:28:55
I remember Hopkins when he was marching with Crossmen in the '70's. I
know he has been an inovator and proven instructor, but I totally agree
with "Curly" regarding NOT introducing electronics to the percussion
pit, or anywhere else for that matter, into Drum Corps. We used to get
a kick out of watching the "marching bassist" with some bands years
ago, an electric bass guitar with his/her own amplifier pusher! That
just seemed so wrong, and still does!

curly   17/Feb/2002:09:05:20
According to the DCI web-site, on 1/27/02 a meeting was held by the
board of directors concerning the use of "electronics" in drum corps
performances. These proposals were voted on and the results are in !!!
The motion failed, with 5 yes votes and 14 no votes. It's interesting
to see who DID vote yes.(BD for one). These proposals were submitted
by mr. george hopkins.(from what I hear, this clown has a history).
Scary to think of what other proposals mr. hopkins could dream up.
Hey, I have one! How about reinstating the "tick" system.
Boy would that shake things up!!

Bob Callahan   15/Feb/2002:04:11:58
Drum corps was changed forever, ruined in my opinion, when they
eliminated ticks. Changing the system to all subjective judging reminds
me of the ice skating controversy going on now at the Olympics. I think
it was at DCI Midwest in ’84 when Garfield did this amazing blind back-up
move. The problem at that performance was that the first guy tripped and
the next 5 people fell on top of him. Then the scores came out and
Garfield got a perfect score in the marching caption. I was teaching SCV
at the time, and at critique the judges told us they didn’t notice 6 guys
lying on their ass on the grass! They would have had to be out getting a
beer not to notice . . . I guess I answered my own question.

Beth Myers   13/Feb/2002:23:27:25
Hey everyone!

The Kilties (co-ed, senior over-18 corps) is seriously in need of some
percussion and guard (and a few more lower brass). CONSIDER IT! We are
having a blast!!!!!!!!!!! Very family/career-friendly schedule. Too
much fun and a kick butt horn line...but we need people before our next
camp (2nd weekend of March). See more at www.kilties.com. or email me
for more info!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

curly   11/Feb/2002:03:43:19
The '79 drumline WAS awesome. I agree, we never did play well together
on a CONSISTENT BASIS. If that line had stayed together for 1 more year
(with the same people, in the same positions)and the same instructors
things would have been a lot different.
But no,... they had to go and bring in B. Callahan.
Don't get me started !!

Gary   09/Feb/2002:22:47:16
Curly, I couldn't agree with you more. Maybe Mr. Hopkins wants some
batons out there too.
Geno, I don't know about the beer choice - I happen to know GK doesn't
touch anything but Schlitz. We've got to talk him into having us over
to his bar room for a few cocktails.

Dick Severa   08/Feb/2002:23:42:27
Hey Geno and Curly and other drummers from '79, I often wonder what you
guys thought of that year. I have always thought the drumline had more
talent than any other I have been in but we never got to a point where
we played well consistently.

Hey all you Kilts, say hi to my friend Dave Santalucia (tenor player).
I marched with him in Bucs and Bush.

Bob Melville   01/Feb/2002:23:12:56
Hey Greg, If they allow electronics in the pit, Let's hope the Cavies
run out of batteries!

Steve Evans 27/Jan/2002:11:23:17
Hey Geno:

Another name from the past!

As I sit here listening to 1979 - It still sends shivers down my back.

Try this email address for Glenn - mellowraith2010@yahoo.com

I saw it down at the lower part of the guestbook!

Man, I sure hope DCI dosen't add electronics to the pit. If they do
that, why not just add live animals, and strings!

Later.

Curly   27/Jan/2002:09:58:55
To Whom it may concern:
Has anyone been to the DCI web-site lately? Scroll down to "rules
proposals" and click. There you'll find that George Hopkins has
submitted to the DCI board of directors a change in the rules for the
year 2003. The rule would allow for the implementation of electronics
to the "pit" section, for drum corps performances. As of this date
it has not been passed,(yet). Symphonic music and drum and bugle corps
shows are still the only forms of "all acoustic music" still left.
(besides marching band). Hasn't corps changed enough??
Stop this clown !
sincerly,
Curly

Great to hear from some of you by e-mail. What a great thing to
reconnect with some great people from great days gone by. The "old
days" don't ever die when so many people remember different things
about them and can share those memories with each other.
G.K. - Great to be in contact with you again... let's go have a couple
Old Mil's (bleah...) soon...
Bob Melville - You've done more with drums and music than almost any of
us... how cool!!
Terry D. - I checked out the Kilties website. Looks like a lot of
fun. We should talk sometime. I'll e-mail ya...
Gary S. - Thanks for sayin' hi... Come have that Old Mil (bleah...)

Still looking for Glenn Conrad!

What a great decision Kathy and I made by joining. A great group of
people, affordable, family-friendly, and no sleeping on gym floors this
time!

But Hello to all my old friends. Write and say hello!

Geno Garrett   13/Jan/2002:06:43:42
Oops ...part II:
Anyone recall such excellent memories like fire extinguishers going off
in schools we stayed in? Staying with 27th Lancers and Kilties in 1978
somewhere in Pennsylvania, and the one night romances that were
everywhere that night? The fact that we were in hot pursuit of 27th
there for a tour in '78? Riding the "Lunar Schooner?" And Dave "Tidy

from ones own body on board that very bus? What great days those were.
I became a somewhat less popular guy in '79, believing we could win DCI
that year if we just tried a little harder, and my intensity getting in
the way of my personality. But I sure had fun anyway. I aged out in '82
as a snare drummer with Madison. Another great year as well, but a
different group of people to share 21 year old craziness with. How I
wish my life was still as "simple" as just playing a drum all day...

I was a snare drummer in '78 and '79. Some great friends from back in

our drum solo "Klinker" there for a while in '79?
Incredible to stumble across this site while browsing corps sites. Of
course so many of your names are familiar to me, but it's been so
long. Like Greg "Curly" Kulma, who was a friend long before G-men when
we were both in a smaller corps together. I had the opp to see him
playing drums at the "Cubby Bear" in downtown Chicago a while back, and
you should all know that he is still truly one of the most fluid and
phenominal drummers in Chicago.
Anyone recall such excellent memories l

I marched in the drum corp for only one season before they folded and
that was 1982 in the colorguard. I also marched in the winterguard
from 1982 - 1987 when I aged out. I then continuted with the guard by
instructing from 1988 through 1991 and that was the last year the
winter guard competed. I would love to hear from anyone who marched
any of those years. It is great to see a Guardsmen website!

about this site. I, in turn, let my mom (Clara "the seamstress" Myers)
and my sister (Kathy Myers) know about the site. We are all having so
much fun reading everyone's comments and memories.

Drum Corps was our life for so long that the memories meld with any
other childhood memories. My family already ordered tickets to DCI
finals this year in Madison. I hope to be back to being a full-time
drum corps fanatic this summer. After watching finals on PBS this year,
and seeing the return of rifles and sabres, I have the itch again.

Man, oh man! All these names coming back from the past! Sometimes I
remember a name and can't put a face to it, sometimes I remember a face
and can't put a name to it. Anyway, I marched '78 - '80 and have a ton
of great memories. I think a reunion is a great idea although, since I
live in Virginia, it might be tough. It'd be cool to hear from anyone
who remembers me and catch up a little. I always think it odd that, of
the thousands of people who have marched in drum corps, I never run
into any - maybe I should wear a sign around my neck. I could dig out
the old Guardsmen jacket but it's a little frayed around the cuffs.
All of you take care, hope it's all going your way.

I think that he sincerely loved us all. The amount of time and effort
that he put into founding the Guardsmen and seeing that vision through

Iwas judging a show this fall, and learned from Len Selinski that
Richard Ledig had passed away. He was tough on us, but looking back he

I joined the corps in 1966 and left in 1970. I would be interested in
the reunion that I've seen posted here. Please count me in on any
updates etc.
One of the posts here recalled the old tag sales. I recall selling
tags in the late '60's during the height of protests against the Viet
Nam War. We were, with some regularity, grilled about
our "Militaristic" outfits etc. Hell, at 14, I just wanted to sell
tags so I could get to Nationals. What a great time! A good
opportunity for a lower middle class kid to travel and see sights that
would not otherwise have been available to her.

Great site!
Hi to Bill Hardy (I married a plumber).

Hi everyone. I've been looking at the site regularly and it's been fun
catching up with a number of you over the past few months. It's hard
to believe that it has been over 25 years since we all marched. I
think it's great that we have some second-generation drum corp kids out
there also.

Just thought I would pass along some information to you. I found out
last evening that Fred "Derf" Campbell, who was in the cymbal line with
Kathy Hill, myself and Ed Anderson, passed away suddenly on Sunday. If
anyone wants to send a note to the family, please contact me and I will

HEY, Paul Majors was right, there is a Guardsman website!

I doubt if anyone remembers me, but I marched in '76-'77, in the
hornline. I live in Lake In The Hills, IL now and run into Paul from
time to time. My cousin Tom Downey marched with the Cavies and is
married to Sharon from Guardsman rifle squad. Sharon sister (who's
name escapes me at the moment), also lives out here. Ran into Kathy
Hill at Schaumburg High School (hi Ira) reunion, she was a cymbol
player w/Guardsman in '76, she's living in Cyrstal Lake, IL.

I was looking at the DCI medallion from '76 just this weekend and
thinking about those daze and what a life education it was, the worm
certainly turned for me during those two summers in the corps. Good
Times indeed!
Hey Mike Kolle how are you?

Terri (Golden)Dittri   16/Oct/2001:05:44:03
Hi everybody,

I told my good friend in Kilties(who is in charge of recruiting), that
I'd do a little gratuitous recruiting of old Guardsmen.

The Kilties from Racine, Wisconsin are looking for some new members to
fill the ranks. I marched there in 2000 and I'm back this year on
Mellophone. I'm looking forward to a great year. We're playing "Henry
V" as our opening selection. I'm sure a few of you from '77 and '79
remember that piece.

If you have that itch to "strap it back on" like I did, you can send an
email to Kilties2002@aol.com, visit the Kilties website at
http://www.kilties.com. Even I can answer some questions about the
corps at my email addy!

There's a couple of Gmen alumni Kilties now. It would be GREAT to have

This is a great website! I have very pleasant memories of competing
against the Guardsmen many years ago. Your brass lines in 78, 79, and
80 were incredible and I never tired of hearing your show. To this day
when someone asks me, "John, what does drum corps sound like?" I play
them a recording of the '79 Guardsmen playing, "Tiger of San Pedro."

No kidding; I really do that!

It was a very special time in drum corps and I enjoyed the friendly
rivalry we had between two corps that were homebased only miles apart
and I think had the Guardsmen survived to this day it would have been a
competitive spirit between Guardsmen and Cavaliers much like the Blue
Devils and SCV have. It makes me sad to think that a great drum corps
like the Guardsmen no longer exists.

What you did at the '79 DCI Finals will never be forgotten; going from
10th to 7th was amazing. Do you remember Maynard Ferguson's gushing
comments about your soloists? I do. He was flat out impressed. So was I.

Hello to you all that marched in the 70's. Seeing names from those
years brings back some long-forgotten memories. . . Initiations, Tag
Days, The Pumpkin, Bus Breakdowns, Winter Guard, Quickies and that
burning desire to make it to DCI Finals. But most important were the

family. We had a great time, didn't we? I would love to see you all

Remember the "hunt for LaDucka" in '78? And Whitewater? Guess those

Gary -

By any chance are you aware that Glenn was the one who posted the
question about the hack mellophone player? He's just trying to build
his ego and you fell for it!!

I refuse to stoop to his level and respond to his obvious cry for
attention.

By the way, did any of you see that striking yet balding soprano

Tim Salzman: I'm in Dallas these days and periodically think about some
of the goofy things we used to do with horn lines. I echo your
sentiment about wishing I knew then what I know now. It appears that
you have made the most of your education and innate understanding of
music and made an excellent career for yourself and family. Speaking of
which, how is Mary? BTW, I just heard from Verona Mucci by e-mail.

Regarding your thanks to me, I wish I could take some credit. You may
remember what things were like in Aurora with Th. (Embry) seeming to
want to destroy everything the Abel's, Goodrich's and all had struggled
so hard to put together. You seemed like (you were) a sane voice in an
otherwise crazy situation (remember Buglino's drill rehearsals??).
However, I still remember seeing your arrangement of the Pines for the
first time. I thought you were crazy, then a few years later Cavs
played it. Well, we couldn't have handled it, anyway. Do you remember
watching a VERY HOT parade

Jan Cheetah   26/Aug/2001:09:14:52
I still remember Mike Ramelli pursuading my parents into letting me
join the corps. So on Mother's Day weekend in '72 I came into camp and
was promptly put in the American Flag squad! (I marched flag -&- rifle in
the Nisei Ambassadors). I think Mike -&- Lenny Krusecki got me a flag
spot. In our first show I promptly dropped the flag on SPINS! I have
no idea what happened. I guess Mr. Lettig figured I really wanted to
march rifle because the next practice I started learning the rifle show.
The rest,they say, is history.

I have such wonderful memories and it's good to see that everyone is
doing well.

I marched with the Rose City Guardsmen later renamed Windsor Guardsmen
from Windsor Ontario CA...I was in the drum line. Had a total blast.
Ken Mazur (from the Phantom Regiment) was our drum instructor. I played
the trap table, quints, base drums....I also stayed at Valley Forge
with the Guardsmen for the DCI in Philly.....practiced on their
football field....had a great time....would be great to connect with
some long lost friends...have a great day....BTW waht is happening with
Ken Mazur these days??

a reunion of the 79 Guardsmen would be awesome! Verona

As a Cavalier Alum (76-81), the Guardsmen were always viewed as a
rival. But it was a healthy and competitive rivalry!

The Guardsmen were great and are missed!

WOW what a site
The past 20 years have gone by so fast.
Gary Stoodley called me last night, told me about this site.
After watching DCI last week this is a perfect time to reflect.
My family still has a hard time understanding what the hell I was doing
all those summers. Been very busy the past few years.

Hey Bob C.,

If you're in the San Francisco Bay area and really want to relive old
times, there's a senior corps waiting for you -- the Renegades from San
Francisco. (Actually, we're from all over the Bay Area.) We just
finished our season and are recruiting for 2002. I marched this year -&-
had an absolute blast. We were 90 strong -- 52 horns -- and hope to
reach 128 next year. Check out our website, http://www.renegades.org.

Callahan here. Lots of familiar names popping up. I hope the people that
posted 6 months ago are still looking in every once in a while.

Do you remember the crazy fundraisers we used to do? Last weekend my wife
and I were driving in San Francisco and while we were stopped at several
traffic lights there were people claiming to be homeless asking for
money. It reminded me of tag days. (Can you believe our parents used to
let us walk in traffic asking for donations, or that people actually gave
us money for a paper Guardsmen tag?) I wasn't very impressed by their
technique and I was reminded of someone who could really work the street
corners . . . Lester Roberts. He would dodge moving cars for a buck and
run to the crossroad when the lights changed. And his bucks were polished
the whole time. I had to tell my wife about Lester and tag days.

Anyway, as Tina said, I'm living in CA with my young wife and cute baby
boy, with another son due in December.

Terri Dittrich   14/Aug/2001:08:11:49
Tina Hagopian! One of the french horn girls. Well, we did rule back
then, didn't we? :-)

Last I heard, Lynn Lieberum was married with a couple kids, living down
near Kankakee. Kathy Myers was a nurse in Rockford. I also heard
about Beth but I can't remember(I'm getting old). As you've probably
already read, Jim and I have a boy marching in Capital Sound from
Madison, Wisconsin. He is center snare and section leader and this was
his third year in the corps. He's going back for more next year, haha!
He turned 16 last Friday in Buffalo.

I would love to see all of you. I think of you often. I hope we can
get this reunion thingie going. I'm going to add all of you who have
posted on the message board to the email list. You can also send your
information to gmen2002@hotmail.com. Andy's home now and a friend from
Scouts who is very computer literate so we're gonna get a webpage going
soon!

HELLO ALL!! WOW! What memories rekindled finding this site! Read in the
Daily Herald that our long time enemies the Cavaliers won DCI, so that
got me curious and here I am. Marched "71-76" cadets/"A"corp in the
drum line. Those memories will always be close to my heart. Nice to see
some of those oldtimers names. Bye for now!

Yo! Finally a site dedicated to the best corp there was. I marched in
the drum line in 80-81,Maybe 81-82 I think. A long time ago!!! I would
love to find some video footage of these years. Can you help. When are
we re-grouping and puting this corp back out there and show'em how it's
done??? It's more than just the most members, it's the dedication and
loyalty to the show and the corp regardless of anything else that makes
it work. Greensleeves, I played it on the Bells from the pit in 81.
(GOOSEBUMPS)thinking about it. Anyone remeber that one? Short fat kid
playing bells to Greensleeves. And to Geoff, can't remeber the last
name who taught me the stick toss for the snare line. You know the one,
5 stroke roll, 2 tosses then in the mouth, then drop to the other hand?
What a pleasent place to find after all these years. Stay in touch.

This site is a God-sent !!
Hello to all my old friends.
I just watched DCI on TV last night, then Gary Stoodley tells me about
this site today.(what a cool weekend)
I don't know how many of you will remember me, but I was that
curly-haired little snare drummer that always seemed to get into
trouble.(and always seemed to have plenty of beer).
I've been reading the postings, and the names of all the people
out there. I have to say Hi to a few of you. Dick Severa,(thanks for
teaching me the secret to playing the "3 stroke roll" correctly.)

I miss those days, and all of you very much !! CURLY

Gary Stoodley   12/Aug/2001:07:30:20
Next time I'll READ the Guest book before I sign in! Glenn Conrad, I
haven't heard from you in ages! Patty Frear, I certainly remember the
car rides out from New York. I remember jogging in the road on the way
home, trying to stay awake! Great to see Tim S. signed in, awesome
instructor. Ira, you weren't IN the DIC squad, you were the President!
Kevin, glad to hear Mitch is doing so well. Tina, in Chicago? Small
world. Mary Mitchell, I can still see you whipping that flag in '80
during prelims at Birmingham. It's great to hear everyone is doing well.
Owen ,what part of Texas? How about you boys in N. Carolina? I travel
a lot for my job, so if I hear from one of you guys you never know, I
might just stop by.

at least one show every year. Some of my best friends still are from
Corps days, including Ira Arenson, Greg Kulma and Paul Harty. I'd love

I know I'll nevewr forget what a blast I had that summer and how many
wonderful people I met marching with the Guardsmen.

I was in the Cavaliers horn line in '79 and '80 and heard a lot of the
Guardsmen. I thought they played some of the best music and had one of
the best horn lines ever. Tiger of San Pedro was just plain great and
I never tired of hearing it. I was searching for a recording of it on
the web tonight and ran across this page. Any chance of directing me
to a link on the web of some '79 Guardsmen music.

Thanks

Kevin Hagopian   08/Aug/2001:05:51:11
Thought people would like to know some of the story behind the
Guardsmen's 1979 opener, "Fanfare for the New." The piece was composed
by Hugo Montenegro, and recorded by something called the Los Angeles
Neophonic Orchestra in 1971. This group was under the direction of Stan
Kenton, and premiered a series of contemporary, experimental
symphonic works scored to emphasize brass and percussion. The piece may
have also have been played by Kenton's band, which at the time was still
touring. A trumpet player in Kenton's band scored it for the Argonne
Rebels, according to Glenn Opie, the corps' former director. (DCI judge
Sandra Opie is Glenn's wife.) Argonne played the song in 1973.
Argonne, like the Guardsmen, was known for a great horn line. The
recording is available on CD as "Stan Kenton Conducts the Los Angeles
Neophonic Orchestra," on the Capitol label. The tune is note-for-note
the same, though the Guardsmen horns sounded better than the
Neophonics...

It's been a thousand years since '79, but it feels like yesterday
reading these notes from everyone. I was talking with Kev and I said
that I had gone for an early morning walk by the lake (i live in
Chicago) and it smelled like an early morning practice (that I was no
doubt late for!). That's how I found out that we are all still out
there wondering how eachother is doing. Scott S., Glen, Mikey A.,
Terri -&- Jim, Bun, Roc, The Shepleys, Ira, Tim S., Scott W., Pat and
Coleen, all the Iowa boys (Owen, kev gives periodic updates, glad to
hear of such a nice life) among so many folks; it absolutely put an
idiot grin (Bill Shake!) on my face to go back to those memories. Who
knew that those years would become such a fixture for us all. Can't
wait to get reconnected.

Thanks Keven H for telling me about this site - good stuff... Bill, I
just figured out that little "jig" thing that you tried to teach the
horn line - (a week before finals in 79) remember? during the sop duet
in Henry V? Tim, so many years with the Cavies... are you ok? I'm in
Texas and see one show per year and if we had to march like they do
now.. well, maybe I would have played more baseball. Good to see Ira,
Todd, Glenn, Dick, Scott, and Scott (lay your head.... ) gosh - I'm
tearing up. Great memories...

What a pleasure to find the Guardsmen on the web, finally. It seems
incredible that there's nothing left to mark an organization that was,
for many of us, the single focus of our lives, whatever years we marched
and however the Corps fared in competition. I love thinking back on
those years, and the strong pull of memories, the vividness of those
laughing faces, and the sound of that great music... It's a little like
having a whole ghost town in your head. As emotionally draining as it
often was (remember Denise Thomaszewski?), it taught me a great deal,
and I met people who had a profound impact on me. The seven years I was
in, from 73-79, went by like a flash...

You might be interested to know that my brother, Mitch, who played
soprano from `74-77, `79-80, and who aged out in Santa Clara in `81, is
now a lawyer in Madison, Wisconsin, and in November, he'll be arguing a
case in front of the Supreme Court. Maybe not as cool as making DCI in
`76, but...

THIS IS GREAT!!!!
BUT I AM SADDENED TO NOT SEE ANYONE I KNOW FROM THE MID 80'S.
THE YEARS I SPENT IN CORPS WERE THE BEST OF YEARS OF MY LIFE.
MY PARENTS TOOK ME OUT OF CORPS WHEN I STARTED HIGHSCHOOL IN 86.
I WAS DEVESTATED. THEY DIDN'T UNDERSTAND THE FEELING I HAD ABOUT CORPS.
SO TO FILL MY COLOR GUARD NEED, I JOINED THE FLAG SQUAD FROM HOFFMAN
HIGH AND COMPETED IN THE ILLINOIS DRILL TEAM ASSOCIATION. WE TOOK
FRIST IN THE STATE IN '87. BUT THOSE FOUR YEARS DON'T HOLD A CANDLE TO
THE TIME IS SPENT WITH MY FREINDS IN GUARDSMEN.

BILL HARTY!!! How the heck are you? This is Mary (Mitchell) from the
guard 78-80. I think about my times in Guardsmen with fond memories.
I am busy as a mom of 3 and a physical therapist. Our kids are into
music but do not have the time for corps. There is still hope because
the oldest is not quite 17. The boys play Trumpet and are downloading
old corps stuff from the internet. I spend my free time (???) as tour
director of our middle son's boys choir. We just completed a 13 day
tour of the Southwest and I draw many comparisons to touring with drum
corps. My husband Tim and I got tickets to DCI East in Philadelphia
and are excited to see all the corps there. We are out of town for the
DeKalb show. KEEP IN TOUCH! I would like to know how you are doing.

Hi everyone,
The idea for a Guardsmen reunion has been floated around for quite
some time now without a lot of serious preparation, so Terri and I have
kind of taken the matter into our own hands and are willing to start
some serious arrangements for a reunion for next season.
There are two sites that we were thinking would be good for a reunion.
Madison, where DCI is being held in 2002, and Dekalb, during DCM
weekend in July. Madison is a great city with a lot of hotels and
places where we could have a large group meet, if our group gets large
enough. It would also give everybody an excuse to go to DCI.Dekalb is
good because it may be closer for a lot of us, and the DCM people may
be more willing to help us out.
We will be sending this note out to as many alumni as possible. We
don't have a lot of e-mail addresses yet, but we'll put this on as many
message boards as we can.You are all welcome to forward this note to
any alumni you may have contact with, and please, if possible,

Nice to see a web site for the oldies. I marched from '74 to '77, I

visit your site. I have some old pics if interested.

I marched color guard in '88 as an age-out rookie. (The only age-out
that year!) I learned so much from Hobie, our instructor. Thanks to
him the color guard was great! Anybody know where he is? Or John
Mallon? Or Noah? Or Stacy? George, the wonder quint player? Anyone I
know? Sigh, perhaps this site is only visited by those from the 70's.
(Although I saw Guy Chamberlain signed the guest book - Hi Guy!) Well,
hopefully I'll be able to meet some of you 70's folks at DCM/DeKalb July
14th.

Thanks for setting up this site! Your efforts are appreciated!

Tim Salzman   29/Jun/2001:20:46:04
To all of you who marched 78-80;

Thanks for your wonderful dedication and patience in tolerating a young
teacher who was trying to find his bearings. I will never forget
you...especially the '79 brass section. Of all of the lines that I
taught (3 yrs. Guardsmen; 7 years SCV; 15 years Cavaliers) the '79
Guardsmen section was clearly the most talented. I wish that I knew
then what I know now! But then again, I'd never have the energy at the
ripe old age of 46!

And to Scott Wagner, wherever you are, thanks for everything.

THIS IS SO COOL!

I played bass drum in 1978 -&- 1979. We were so entertaining in '79! I
would do it all over again!

I ran into this site from http://www.worlddrumcorpshof.org/ most of
these names I haven’t seen since 1979. It's about time there is a site
for G-Men! Keep the posts coming!

Scott Dickinson   08/Jun/2001:15:59:47
Hey y'all, this is Scott Dickinson, contra player, one of the Iowa boys who marched in 79, and oh yeah, 1980. I saw this web page awhile ago. In fact Larry Mann, I beleive it is, the contra player from Michigan is the one who set it up. I recognize a lot of names from the past. Scott the french horn player, Ira, Glen Conrad and I think I even saw a posting from MR BILL!!!I live in North Carolina now very close to John Davisson, we both work for the same Insurance company. I always what happened to every one. Anybody ever hear from Owen Raun? Last I knew he was in Texas. Alwyas wondered what happened to him. I hear from Dick Severa (snare) every once in a while, he lives in Virginia. I checked out a Senior corps in the Raleigh Durham area, never say never huh? Anybody know what happened to Kelly Grimes? Boy that girl could sass.....
By the way, I want to reming you all I'm the one who thought of putting the contras in the middle of the rifle toss in 79, thank you very much.
Now only if we had practiced M -&- M

Ah yes, the dreaded Guardsmen. We were always chasing you back in the
early 70's. Seems we could never get within a point or two. Eventually,
the "Punkins" as we lovingly refered to went upwards and the Ottawa
Crusaders went out.

Nothing about the Kentucky Fried Chicken commercial?

i marched in Guardsmen but not the one you remember... i marched from
91 to 94 i was 8 when i first started there. that year was the first
year that the guardsmen cadets had to step up and take the name the
guardsmen. i might have some old stuff in my basement from the
guardsmen. my mom was the old board of directors so we actually have
the old trophies still. a guy we know wants to bring the guardsmen back
so he will be taking them soon.

continued from ist message since this space was not long enough.
until I heard Stan Kenton's Fanfare for the New. i was hooked and had
to march the 1979 season as my last before aging out. I had marched
with some great corps in canada and especially marching along some of
the greatest drumlines that ever existed. However, the hornline never
came to the brillance that I heard in 79's hornline. Eventhough we
came 4th that year I still felt that we were the best considering the
chops that we needed for the first three charts. If I never said it
then, it was a pleasure being associated with the 79 guardsmen. anyone
hear from mitch and bob callihan. I lost contact with them a few years
ago.
Ira, good to see that you haven't lost your humor. My brain cells got
a melt down over the years because i somehow ended up in indiana and
married a hoosier.
Glen, good to know you are alive and well. I can still hear your
solo's. All right Ira, you weren't too bad either. I may have been

I was always wondering what happened to the guardsmen. You might
remember that I marched in 1979 and then moved to staff for the 1980
season. certainly those years were different and fun. I was reading
the messages from everyone and instantly I was back in michigan city,
In, 1979 where we invented mick angel, bill shake, etc.

Everytime that I hear Van halen, Elvis costello, The knack, the Clash
it brings me back to 1979 and i start to recall all those fun people we
had assembled.

It was a different experience for me since I had marched with De la
salle and Oakland Crusaders. We had always looked at the guardsmen as
a vovelty corps eversince we had seen the kfc commercial back in 1976-
77. Until I showed up to a practice at harper college around may 1979
and hung around listening to the horn line. even early in the season
you could tell immediately that this group of musicians had something
special. 77 was my last year with the crusaders and I had hung up my
lips until
